Does it have to be STK600?
AVRISP mkll cost about $30 and can be used for most Atmel chips including all ATXMEGA.
It is a USB device, also works with Studio4 (also firmware updates with Studio4).
I am sure there are other inexpensive devices on the market.
By the time you are finished with the project it will probably cost you more than the original.
Even if you get the schematics, then you still need to program the device with the communication protocol, which will be quite an operation.
STK600 is not a hardware only device!

I buit the avrUSB500v2 programmer used bascom and the parallel port to program the mega8 did not use the FTDI USB to RS232 chip I just purchased a USB to RS232 cable for my PC and put a max232 chip on the serial lines, now I have a RS232 port on my PC and a USB or RS232 programmer works great with the bascom native driver.

have a look here for details http://shop.tuxgraphics.org/electronic/detail_avrusb500.html

hi Kits

yes, i have this one too. But when you use/need usb (libusb) i think the original atmel programmer (30$) is the better choice since it works with both studio and bascom.
Of course for self builders it might be a cheap solution.

I was wondering if a serial programmer (rs232 or ftdi usb virtual com port) existed for ISP/PDI. This way you do not need libusb which is causing problems for some.
