|
|
Hello,
I am thinking of trying out the Xmega128a1 chip. I wonder who
and where the best development board. How is it to work with? Easy
or hard? Buggy, or not? Steep learning curve or no so bad if you already
know bascom and programming etc.
Also I am used to the MCS electronics USB ISP programmer.
Any thoughts on the programming(sending programming data)
would be great.
Thanks.

To program an ATXMEGA128A1 you need an AVRISP MKII Programmer.
I'm using AVR Studio with AVRISP MKII to flash the HEX Files generated by Bascom-AVR.
Alternatives for XMEGA Programming are: STK600 ®, AVR ONE! ®, JTAGICE mkII ® und AVR DRAGON ®
Use latest Version of AVR Studio is here: http://www.atmel.no/beta_ware/
In AVR Studio there you find the AVR Tools User Guide Help file where everything is what you need to get started.
There is a breakoutboard available for ATXMEGA128A1. Google for "XMega100 Breakout"
There are versions of ATXMEGA128A1 out there where the factory calibration Byte for the Analog Input is not working and therefore you would not get the 12-Bit for Analog Input.

This is relevant to my interests as well.
Last week I ordered the (cheap!) atmel xplain evaluation board (from digikey) and one of the AVRISP MKII clones off ebay (risk, I know). The nice thing with that board is that it's got SDRAM all wired up and ready to go (among other things)! The not so nice thing is that as far as I can tell there are only two free ports left. But at $30, I'm not gonna lose sleep over that. |

Thanks for your replies. I am considering my options, I found this
development board.
http://xmega.mattair.net/
It looks to me that with the correct USB cable which I think I have, that
I can send HEX file from bascom to AVR Studio and then send the flash
to the Development board. I have not done this type of programming
using AVR Studio but I should be able to figure it out.
I like the breakout boards but don't feel up to designing the power supply
and crystal connection etc just yet. I liked the price on the
AVRISP mkII In-System Programmer.
Learning a lot and considering everything.
I am new to this level of board power, only up to 3.6volts, wonder
how that may limit me..?

it shouldn't. I admit to not knowing a WHOLE lot, but it seems the much faster chips need to operate on less power (and are probably optimized as such). |
