The compact flash card can be configured for 8 bit or 16 bit true IDE mode. I forgot the details, but it's all out there on the www .
If you plan on using it in 16 bit true IDE mode, then you will have to use the IDE driver. (and hope that it works)
8 bit uses less wires & ports.
I'll check first if there are enough I/O pins for 16 bit.
If not, then I'll use 8 bit and no IDE adapter.
Note: I still don't understand that people don't like the vintage 8255
cause this chip reduces I/O just to 8 databits and control bits
to end up with a 16bit IDE port.
