Aside from the benefits that Atmel describes, do you think we can expect BASCOM to be able to keep up or even support this next generation?

I sure hope so!

I use Bascom because I didn't want to learn C, and I don't want to start now!

Keep up the Great Work, Bascom, and I, for one, am anxiously awaiting your XMega support!

Looks sweet indeed the xmega.
Anyone managed to get their hands on the STK600 yet and tried bascom?

Except for all the extra functions added in the xmega i guess bascom would compile and run as is on simple apps.

@Joakim: I think you share my view. Getting BASCOm to support the new chips minimalistically will not be so tough, but to implement the wealth of new architectual capabilities should be a nightmare for the Compiler.
As to the wealth of new peripherals we would have to start implementing subroutines for it. On the other side it will be interesting to see the functions build into the new devices at the beginning. I guess Atmel will drive those via projects with key accounts.

I am anctious to see a device with the DMAC and the Xmemory I/F. As I am planing to interface epson LCd controller with uC I have started learning Verilog and the programming of CPLD´s. Now I see that quite a few of my planned functionality is available with the Xmega
