They are using now Mc CAD (http://www.mccad.com/), but switching over to ALTIUM (www.altium.com).
All the library's are custom made, so you can't get the same shape's or you must make you own.
Splan is using symbols that looks almost the same as the Elektor symbols.

There is a recent Diptrace review here:
Part1
http://codeandlife.com/2012/05/28/attiny2313-breadboard-header-with-diptrace
Part2
http://codeandlife.com/2012/06/02/pcb-design-with-diptrace/#more-672

In the next Part he willl go through the gerber creation process, and show how the PCB turned out.

(Reviews may be somewhat difficult to find at codeandlife. You have to read through the montly blogs. That is why I put the direct links.)

I will stay with Kicad mainly because it works very well and secondly its FREE . It is also the full thing you do not have to pay to go to a larger board or multi-layers. Each to his own but for me its a hobby and I want to spend my money on the hobby I see no point in paying out money when there is an alternative of equal quality. Also you can make any shape part you want and store it in a library or alter those that already exist to suit.

Well, personal users can have Diptrace for free at 500 pins and 2 layers. If your requirements grow then upgrades prices are affordable I think. But you are right: Kicad is all free.

I am in the same position as you are.
I once started a try to learn to use Eagle, but that was too difficult for me. I have now DesignsparkPCB on my PC and played a little bit with it, and I like it. I have not enough experience to judge, but I think it works approximately like Diptrace.
DesignsparkPCB is free and has no restrictions for size or layers. I keep it on my PC and trust that I can learn to use it more when I need it. It is easy compared to Eagle. I will not try Eagle again.
If DesignsparkPCB disappoints me (it did not yet) then Diptrace will be my first alternative. For an appealing product I am prepared to pay something. However I do not so much like Diptrace' s pin and layer limitations after I have paid the bill.
