Since I did not do any chip programing for quite some time and Win10 was installed and updated often in between,
AVRISP mkII and STK500 did not work any more.

I just installed Atmel Studio 7 and got a driver updated for mkII from 10Jan2019 ver. 43.0.0.0, Digital Signer: Microchip Technology Norway AS.
Running in ..\LibUSB-Win32\bin\install-filter-win. Plug the usb-cable in the computer when prompted for the device. The device should appear in the list from which to select. Let the program finish and close it.
When I finally was able to connect and read the programmer, Atmel Studio7 updated the Firmware of AVRISP mkII.
Happy Ending, even it took me two damn days to figure it out.
AND I got it to work with programming in Bascom first !... Previously it was always mentioned to get it running in Atmel Studio first.
Anyway it might help not to toss old stuff. Have to still get the STK500 set up and maybe working too.

Best regards
Hubert

Edit: Device manager shows: Microchip Tools
AVRISP mkII
Properties in Studio7: com.atmel.connection.libusb0

I've used the following on 3 different computers and the AVRISP MKII works just fine with Bascom (no AVR Studio install needed)

when you dont need to install Studio you can also install a device driver in libusb.
but then the programmer will not work with both studio and bascom.

Thank you Mark,
meanwhile I have installed the AVRISP mkII and STK500 on the PC and mkII on the laptop. Working on studio 7, 6.2, 4...and Bascom.
Reason for both: The STK500 has options for parallel programing and sockets for the pin-versions and a 501 expansion for 64-pin smd. I also have several non-force insert sockets wired for different pin and smd versions I can program before installation.
Some of the boards are pretty small and for space saving I did not install the ISP-connectors (kind of bad).
If I ever get the old PCI-rs232 insert going, then STK500 can also be used on the laptop...or I will get a USB-rs232 converter (have one somewhere). The move two years ago has still not brought everything to sunlight.
Slowly I am getting back into it again.
Thanks for everything, otherwise I would still be doing asm.

Best regards
Hubert
