Ischarwaiting in BASCOM 8051

I need to use an at89c for a project but also require backspace to be available when commands are entered via the com terminal. I see from other posts that this can be done in Bascom AVR using Ischarwaiting (as discussed at http://www.mcselec.com/index2.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=59&page=viewtopic&t=12871&highlight=backspace). Is there a way I can achieve the same result via other means in Bascom 8051?

8051 supports BS with the INPUT statement.

I have tried Input command but it allows unlimited character input. I would prefer to limit the number that can be entered and transmit the Bell character to notify user once they exceed the allowable input string length.
