I didn't think the M103 has a USB Host hardware module.
I am curious as to how you will have the M103 write data to the USB drive.
GPS will be fun to work with.
I would suggest in addition to getting the LCD up and running, you also get a USART to USB or USART to RS-232 link to a PC working, so you can simply copy the GPS outputs to the PC and capture them in a terminal program.
You will see that as the GPS first starts up there are many null fields, and your software will need to be able to process them, (i.e. skip them).
