|
|
Hello dear Reader,
I seem to be unable to use my USB-ISP programmer on my new Windows8.1 machine (it worked perfectly on Windows XP and Windows 7(32)).
I duely downloaded the driver files as per the HELP instructions and put them into the "USB" - Folder.
When connecting the programmer, Windows says "Installing" and after a while seems to have finished. However, no light starts on the programmer and the Hardware Manager shows the USB-ISP Programmer with the infamous "!" in a yellow triangle.
Is there a separate set of Drivers for W8.1 (or W8) ?
Thanks for your consideration

Hi,
Could it be that Windows 8 expects a signed Driver? Are you running 32 or 64bit Windows?
Regards

Thank you Ian, for your prompt response.
It could well be that W8 expects a signed driver, although in such cases I would expect a (warning) message like "This is not an authorized driver etc. ".
I also had problems to get the widely used USB/RS232 converters working. None of my three pieces worked - they all have the "wrong" chip inside. If such a converter is not specifically suited for W8 it won't work. The "new" ones don't cost more, they just have a different chip. That, of course, could also be the problem with my USB-ISP programmer.
Best regards

Push the "Shift" Button while clicking Restart to enable unsigned driver. You will get a menu to choose "abgesicherter Modus" (press "7")
After the reboot you get the Driver hint "...Treiber trotzdem verwenden"
As far as i know, there is no permanent way to do this! So you should press "shift" before every reboot, otherwise driver will not be operating!
have a look at this:

With USB to RS232 devices I found with a lot of searching the old driver works fine but you have to stop win8 from updating it to the newer one that does not.
You can get the prolific RS232 devices to work ok.
So you have to lock it out in the updates section.
Its best to turn automatic updates off so you can choose.
I also lost my sound from my PC only to find out that it was a problem with a windows update.
With many drivers I have had to go through turning off driver signing.

Thank you both, six1 and Paulvk.
I have tried various approaches, but was not successful. Before fooling around too much in my new W8 baby I'll continue to do my programming from W7.

Hello all,
is anybody out there who is using the USB-ISP programmer on a W 8/8.1 OS and got it running the "conventional" way?
Thanks

On the subject USB-ISP Programmer and W8 I did some more searching.
Since deactivation of the driver signature enforcement did not help, I tend to believe that the USB-ISB chip doing the USB communication might not be suitable for W8 no matter what the driver is.
Prolific lists a number of chips expressedely NOT suitable for W8, whereas it seems that all FTDI chips work with W8.
Does anybody know what chip is actuallay used in the USB-ISP programmer?
Thanks

An FTDI245 chip is used. This is a parallel serial chip.
I had no problems in windows 8. I do not remember if i tested with 8.1 as well.
I would perform a new test but i do not have usb-isp programmer. I do have a defective unit which i could repair for test. But this will take some time.
I think i permanent turned off driver signing in win8. _________________ Mark |

Thanks Albert for your information.
My problem is solved now. After I went 3 times through the driver signature deactivation routine, W8 finally reacted.
The nice thing, after deactivating the enforcement W8 goes back to the "old" reaction "..do you want the driver dnstallation anyway...." and upon YES installs the driver like in the good old days.
Thanks again and best regards

Hello Ernst
The chip that prolific said does not work actually does work very well just not with the new drivers windows 8 wants to install.
A lot of searching found the correct (old) driver for me!
Details>> PL2303
Driver Provider Prolific
Driver date 24/09/2008
Driver version 3.3.2.102
Note you have to force windows to use this driver then not let it update!
The chips that are suppose to work do not work very well they keep dropping in and out.
Some of the USB to RS232 cables are not RS232 compliant they are 5V only and will fail when connected to a real RS232 device.
I have a USB programmer based on an Mega8 chip but have not tested it enough to say it works well all the time.
I looked up Arduino ISP programmer and there are instructions on how to turn an Arduino into a programmer this may be a way to go.

Just a reaction that I managed to succesfully install the driver i downloaded from the MCSelec.com site, MCS Shop(4, Programmers(4), scroll down to USB-ISP and select programmer product details, again scroll down and hit "You can download drivers also here"
Now to succesfully install the driver switch off the signature verification in Win 8.1 as follows:
Hit the Windos key + "C"
Settings
Change PC settings
Update and recovery
Advanced startup
Restart now
(system re-starts)
Troubleshoot
Advanced options
Startup settings
Restart
[F7] (this is the function key "F7"
(system re-starts)
Don't forget to check you've selected the correct programmer in Bascom, options, programmer, USB-ISP Programmer
Good luck! |

many thanks Roland
I put Bascom on the W8.1 64 bit computer I followed step by step your explanation and my USB - ISP works without problem.
