I am using Bascom-AVR 2.0.7.3 In the File pull-down menu there is an item called Sample. What is this for? It is not documented in the Help file. |

It's a direct link to the sample folder of Bascom, which contains tons of sample code to demonstrate Bascom's capabilities.
The actual purpose of this link for many users is to ignore it |

In the File menu "Sample" should be "Samples" or better, "Bascom code samples".
Also the information bar at the bottom of Bascom window should display “Open a Bascom code sample”.
Best regards,

Anyone with an interest for the matter and a sound curiosity should be able to find out what's behind. Without these two qualities I seriously wonder how one has made it into µC programming at all. |

Self-explaining GUI = less questions to answer for the developer.

Hmm, what level of user we're talking about ?
A programming language for µC's is rather not a tool for pre school level, already because the syntax of that language has to be learned in the first place.
If you feel that button to click is not self-explaining enough, I'd wonder what you would think about a tool like Xilinx's ISE... |

But this menu option will only open one (1) sample, so why should i name it samples which would suggest that it will open multiple samples?
The menu option names all have a short name like Save, Print, Open, etc. you read them together with the main/top menu name. In this case it is FILE.
So it reads : File .. Open..
And in case of a sample : File.. Open.. Sample
While i could change the name into : Open Sample File, it gives longer names and more to read.
The hint text i will change.
It is good that nobody clicked this option, you never know what will happen, we have seen that in 'the box'
When i get multiple support questions, or see that there are multiple questions on the forum i always try to improve. _________________ Mark |

Hi Mark,
LibreOffice Writer, menu File:
New
Open
Recent Documents
Wizards
Close
Save
Save As..
Save All
...
...
...
In LibreOffice when you select "Recent Documents" you will open
only one file when you select it from the list of the recent documents.
"Recent Files" and "Recent Projects" are also present in menu "File"
of Visual Studio.
* * *
With Windows 7 x64, in order to compile the samples you must run Bascom as
administrator. If you run Bascom normally and you try to compile a sample,
no output files will be written in the sample folder and Bascom will give no
error. In these conditions sometime the IDE also crashes. (2.0.7.3).
Logging in as administrator makes no difference, you must run Bascom
as administrator. The other solution is to change the access rights for the
folder where the sample is located.
Best regards,
Luciano |

I have no knowledge about libre office. I think Open Sample is better than Open Samples. But if i get a number of requests to change it i will do it.
In windows 7, microsoft has changed the Program Files permission. I see no good reason for that : every week i must reboot because of all the patches and security holes.
When you lock the program files folder, a user can simply install into any other folder. I think it would be better to check if programs are altered after installation. but that is another discussion.
Each version of windows makes program info fragmented further. The days that one could use XCOPY to save a program are over. now you need to dump the register keys, documents folder, program folder, system32, etc.
Of course running setup again will do too. but when you altered libs and other files you will not get all files and settings.
A future version will store the samples in the user Documents folder.
I will check why you dont get an error when you save/compile a file in a non writable folder. _________________ Mark |

i did a test and added a warning when you open a file from a protected/non writable folder.
the IDE will show READ ONLY too in the status bar. _________________ Mark |
