Hello to all of you
I would like to use a USB barcode reader with an arduino or an Atmega 1284
I have a sparkfun module FTDI basic with a FT232rl.

The barcode reader returns characters when I plug it directly into my PC so it works.

on the other hand when I connect it in 5v I don't see any variation on the TX line on the scope, even if the reader emits a beep

I would like to retrieve these codes from the AVR with the UART

I attach the schematic of the module

how do I connect the DTR and CTS pins?
I'd try to find the right baud rate.

many thanks to your help

Hi JP,

I don't think that'll work. Your Barcode Reader is a USB slave device that Needs to connect to a USB Host (In you test your PC). The FT232rl is also a USB slave.

If you really want to do that you'll Need a USB Host on your PCB/Connected to the Atmel.

Maybe something like this might work http://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/usb-host/usb-host-board-v2, depending on what the Barcode Reader "tells windows" what it is (USB Flash Drive, USB Keyboard, USB Mouse etc.)

Hi JP,

about a decade ago I used a barcode reader on a PC. But it plugged in with a split cable into the keyboard connection. So I think it might work with the AT-keyboard interface. Not sure, but you might research that.
I don't think rs232 works with it.

Best regards
Hubert

Hi JP,

youtobe.com has a few connection examples for barcode readers.
Search for "barcode reader with microcontroller"
