USB Oscilloscopes
A full-fledged alternative
In the past, a lot of space in hobby rooms and work stations was taken up by an instrument in a large case with a small screen, but now many of its functions can be performed using a PC. A small box can transform an ordinary PC into an oscilloscope with extensive functions, in many cases including several extra functions. Elektor Electronics subjected eleven of these ‘USB oscilloscopes’ to an extensive evaluation.
Scopes on test:
Handyscope HS4-50
Handyscope HS3-100
PicoScope 3205
Bitscope BS-310U
ETC M522
Penscope DAQ
Bitscope BS-50U
Swordfish PS40M10
Stingray DS1M12
Conrad DSO-220 USB
Parallax USB Oscilloscope

I use a picoscope 2202 at work. I have found it very useful and easy to use, mostly used with a dataprojector for teaching. There are a couple of issues with the software particularly shifting the traces from each sample on the screen to clearly see each which are a pain, perhaps I have not fully read the manual. I have also had some issues with the device being detected when it is plugged in although this could just be a problem with the setup of the machines at work. The bandwidth is too low for you (2MHz) but the 3000 series look good. I would recommend you try out the software - free download from www.picotech.com.
A useful device but not perfect. I hope this helps. _________________ Regards,

Hi Steve,
I have a bitscope, the BS310U, and for the most part, quite like it. Like dswinsco said about the picco, it isn't perfect, but it is pretty good. I haven't used the logic analyzer yet, but ...
Bitscope is partially open source, they provide an API, so there are various front ends written for it. I have only used the DSO, but then I've only had my scope for about a month.
I like the sturdy aluminum case it comes in, and the probes are not too expensive ~30$
Hope this is of some help.
Regards,
Robert |

Hi,
About BitScope BS50U:
Size: 100x25x100 mm (WxHxD)
(USB powered or powered with an external power supply).
You can carry a notebook and the BS50U in the same notebook bag.
(No need to take with you the power supply for the BS50U).
