Sad news reached me this weekend. Ben Zijlstra passed away on 29 June 2017. Ben was born 4 Feb 1956. He died way too young.
Ben was ill for a long time but remained positive till the end. Even while he was ill, he helped other users on the forum with their problems. His last post :
Quote:
Perhaps we all should take an icecream to cool down. So much trouble in the world....

More than 1100 posts. Most posts were to help others.
Ben made a lot of projects. Often with Theo a good friend of him.
Many projects were shared on this forum or his own website.

Ben was a bascom user of the first hour. he started with B8051 and gave many good ideas for improvements. Ben also beta tested bascom-AVR.
I visited Ben years ago at his work place. He was very passionate about his work. Ben knew a lot about networks and electronics. A likable man.

Even before i knew Ben was ill, i gave Ben the 'bascom ambassador recognition' . This because he promoted bascom in a great way.

While Ben passed away, his projects remain for ever. I was lucky to get some of his hardware projects like a bascom-Rolex and the Weather Station.

Ben leaves Intisar (his wife) and Nour (his son) behind. I wish them strength.
I know many of you knew Ben. In case you want to send his relatives a letter :

Rest in peace Ben!

My friend Ben,

For more than 20 years we know each other without ever having met us.
We exchanged through the Basic Bascom forum and we had a common passion.

I know that in your paradise you continue to build nice hacks

I'll miss you, I'm very sad.

That's really sad news.

Ben was the reason I decided to move over to Atmel/Bascom, his projects/documentation where always very well written with more than enough technical information and a bit of humor just to lighten things up.

I can imagine what his family is going through (My wife died last October).

I'm not sure how it is in the Netherlands but in my home country (Switzerland) it's quite normal for the Family to request that donations go to a specific charity, rather than sending flowers. Does the family have a charity in mind?

Ben was really a "A likable man" and I know that I'll miss him and his posts, even though we never met in person.

Regards
Ian Dobson

That's really sad news.
I didn't knew Ben in person but we had also mail contact outside this forum about Bascom projects.
Ben was just like me one early bird Bascom user, starting with Bascom 8051 and Bascom Avr.
Ben was always very helpful, first on the Bascom mailing list and later on this forum.
He did a tremendous job with his tcp/ip program on the Rtl8019 what opened for the first time tcp/ip communication in Bascom.

Thanks Ben for helping us.
Rip

I was shocked to read this message here.

Being from the same city and as a Bascom hobbyist I met Ben a few times at the 'Wisclub' (I think he did run the site http://blog.wisclub.nl/#home). He was an important member, allways trying & making new things work, many projects far beyond electronics only. Everyone wanted him in.
Despite his illness he allways kept a wonderfull positive attitude. He made the best of his remaining years, being helpfull and sharing fun, curiosity and knowledge with others.
I, and many others will miss him. He will be remembered for a looong time. R.I.P. Ben!

He was always very innovative with his approach to new ways to stretch the capabilities of Bacom to the max.

I don't mourn someone's passing I rather celebrate their life and who they were and what they meant to their family and friends.

RIP Ben... and happy coding dear friend Smile

I am saddened to hear of Ben's passing. And also of Ian's wife's passing. Both too young to "leave the building".

RIP both.

Bad news about Ben. I too have benefited much from his presence on the forums. Condolences to his family.
