Hello,
Just as I have almost finished coding my portable radio project, they have come out with a newer/improved broadcast radio chip. This new part has some improved reception features, take a look at the specifications,
http://www.silabs.com/products/audiovideo/amfmreceivers/Pages/Si477x.aspx
I have pretty much finished the design & layout portion for a small breakout PCB, which is really just a copy of the evaluation board, as they gave documented in,
http://www.silabs.com/products/audiovideo/amfmreceivers/Pages/Si477x.aspx
I have no plans for a HD radio (Si4777) as that is way beyond my DSP skills, but the board can be used in that application, if you require.
The board that I have done is very small, ~2.5"x1.5". I can post the schematic & layout for review, as required.
The Si4770 part is in a difficult to solder 40-pin DFN package, but I believe that it can be hand soldered. I have experience with a MAX9729 part, in a 20-pin DFN, just have to make the Solder Mask a bit bigger so that one can place the small soldering iron tip on the exposed copper traces, which would allow the the solder to wick up the trace to the package pads!! Either this method or use paste and a hot air machine, which can be bought for cheap at Sparkfun Electronics.
I have managed to find all the parts, Digi-Key or Mouser but the TOKO BALUN is hard to get. You can still operate the part without the BALUN at reduced Intermod. specifications.
I was planning on getting a couple of boards made through, http://www.batchpcb.com, sometime in the next month or so.
The eval board uses 4-layers, but I think that it can be done with 2-layers, as that is what I have done so far!!
$10 setup fee (shown as a handling charge) - $2.50 per square inch for 2 layer designs, $8.00/sq. in. for 4 layer designs.
I have code written to operate the Si4735 part, so I do not belive that their is that many changes for this newer part.
If you are interested, let me know, as I would like someone to do a design review for what I have done already and try to make this design work first time.
Regards
Rick
