Hi,
I am looking into a making a small solar power system. I want to construct some of the components myself, rather than buying them conplete to save some money and to learn also.
Right now, I am looking at the link between the solar panels and the power to my house. I need an inverter that will convert the variable DC voltage to an AC voltage and the phase of the AC signal has to match what is coming from the power company.
I have done internet searches and got alot of information on how to buy such a device. I am looking for the circuit so I can make one. They are VERY expansive to buy. Probably for a good reason that I will discover down the road, but I still want to try.
Part of the expense of a commercial grid-connected inverter is probably certification/testing by standards bodies and utility companies. This inverter project isn't something to embark on unless you really know what you're doing (complex control systems and power electronics), as the potential for blowing up your circuit or doing damage to other equipment is significant and there is potentially danger to users. Putting power back into the mains is a tricky business (not that I'm any kind of expert on it!).
Unless the solar array provides quite a lot of power (like more than 1kW) it's probably not worth doing a mains-connected system. It's certainly safer to simply charge batteries from solar and feed an off-grid inverter. Designing/building charge control and a normal inverter is probably a better project. _________________ If all else fails, read the manual. Even better: read the manual before something fails.
