Hi Adrian,

Thanks for the reply - I'm just trying to offload the "string to val" and "val to string" conversions to
the called functions rather than the main program loop.

I've got a function that I want to accept either a string or value passed to it.

Question is there an easy way to figure out what data type a variable is?

I still need to decide on std mega128 (4k ) with an external usb bridge or a USB1287 cpu with more memory ( 8 k ) and internal USB - any feedback ?

Just a little tip - if you remove the bootloader and go down the ISP road......
make sure you change the reset vector fuse bit to $0000

Well this happened to me, it's stupid but I spent 15 mins trying to figure it out....

Make sure you have a bas file loaded and not one of the INC files. Embarassed

It is important that a CLS follows the DEFLCDCHAR statement(s).

So make sure you use the DEFLCDCHAR before your CLS statement.

You do realise that the Flash ( program memory ) of an AVR has a very limited number of memory write cycles ?

Isn't it >10,000 ?

even around 1,000 would be ok ( well for the application I ha ...
