"normel" DMX starts with a start byte value of 0. If RDM will be used... the start byte will have a different value. In that case DMXslave will not store data.

did some tests - using correct DMX telegrams and forced corrupted telegrams.
The most robust indicator is the _dmx_sync=1 (break received)

no, delays do not change the behavior.
Some time (years....) ago I used the EA DOGM128-6. There were no delays necessary.
Edit: Both use the same lcd-chip ST7565r
