I did kind-of understand the 8 bit/byte requirement just not the read part of the process !

Yeah, I do have an 8 pin socket on the STK200 for the ATtinys... BUT... the AVR programmer (that came with it) doesn't communicate with Bascom which makes life a little more ...

Yes, either a 6 to 10 converter or use the 6pin header on the Kanda board - there are both 6 pin and 10 pin headers on the (newer ?) Kanda boards.
