hello everybody !
20 years? I saw what I see every day without paid attention Bascom = 20 years this year ! 1995-2015
Please Mark, let us know the day of the creation !
I am an old man now, Bascom AVR has been a revelation 18 years ago for me.
I started my company on an idea with Bascom.
I sold 1753 versions (so far and it is not over yet) of a program for counting blood cells and sperm.
In collaboration with another company, we equipped hundreds of robots.
And the thing I'm most proud: small boxes which drive the HF generator for radars followed the rocket Ariane V!
MANY MANY THANKS MARK !
jp

Hello IP
Thank you. Great to hear you had success using bascom. There are many people like you. People with great ideas that used bascom because it was simple to use. It allowed to concentrate on the electronics and idea.
yes time flies ! I would need to restore very old backups to check the date. It started with bascom-LT for the 89c2051. At that time most circuits required many TTL and CMOS chips. The 8052AH with a basic interpreter was nice but slow and it required UV erasable EPROMS. So when i discovered the 89C2051 from Atmel which could be reprogrammed using a high voltage (12V) it was a step forward. I recognized the fact that soon many TTL/CMOS chips would be replaced by 1 or more simple micro chips. It simplified designs. The available tools at that time were all too complicated for me. The first bascom was for DOS. It was never published.
The first public version was BASCOM-LT. It was for windows 3.x. I designed a simple programmer with a ZIF socket since it was still needed to get the chip out of the circuit in order to program. and Sample Electronics made great programmers that would allow to program in circuit. I also designed some simple evaluation boards. Those were the days the hobbyist designed PCB them self. No arduino lego blocks. Electronics were relatively expensive as well. But INTERNET did not exist as it does now.
We used Compuserve and mail lists. There were many people that recognized the possibilities. The big advantage was of course that all research for controlling lcd, 1wire, i2c, etc. was already done by me. And just a change of $REGFILE would make the code work for a different micro. I spent a lot of time to improve the tool and helping users with their projects.
BASCOM-8051 was a redesigned tool for 32 bit windows. It had enhancements as well. Since some 8051 processors are cheaper than any other processor, this tool is still used.
When the AVR was introduced i started a rewrite for the AVR. The AVR can be reprogrammed in circuit which is just great. And it is available in PDIP. A great choice for proto types.
The AVR is very popular in many countries. And as atmel keeps adding chips, we keep improving it. _________________ Mark |

Congratulations from me too Mark !
I too started programming micros in the days of 6800 and 6502 chips, using the crash-and-burn cycle.
AVRs and Bascom have advanced a long way since then ! _________________ Adrian Jansen

This milestone is a good moment for reflection.
I started with Bascom 10 years ago. Had a board with a 8052AH Basic and found the interpreter dead-slow. So I purchased Bascom8051. A few hours later I read about the AVR. Never used the 8051 compiler ! Got me a few AVR's, purchased BascomAVR and never looked back.
Congratulations Mark !
I also wish to thank the fellow Bascom users for their support and all I learned from them.

Hi, people,
I wish to send congratulation to Mark, not only for these 20 years that have leaded us to better places with Bascom, but for your personnal efforts to make this better and better with the new versions. And also I want to cumpriment many peoples from this fórum, that with your knowledge helped many of us to use this great compiler, like Ben, Plons, Durval, Jure, Adrian, and many others.
My congratulations !

thank you all. of course i could not have done it without my wife supporting and helping me. And Tomi who joined later.
And indeed without the help of all users that helped in one or more ways it would not have been possible to put so much time into this.
I dont want to write a list here because i might forget someone. But i thank all people that shared code , inspiring projects, and helped other users on the forum. _________________ Mark |

Like the others, I just wanted to add my Congrats!
Microcontroller-wise I started with the Basic Stamp.
I max'd out the memory, and it didn't have user accessible interrupts.
That led to my using a Basic programmed Pic.
I then found Bascom, and haven't used a Pic since!
Thank you for your ongoing support, adding the Xmega's, etc.!

Congrats Mark! You made a big difference 20 years ago. And you still are making that difference to many engineers that prefer Bascom-AVR instead of C.
Like many of you I also made many projects and wrote many Bascom books, most of them in Slovenian and one in English.
Thanks to Mark - and whole Bascom community.

Congrats Mark ...
I've been using Bascom for over 10 years (in the beginning just for private Projects and in the last 3-4 years for Company projects).
In the beginning there was a lot of resistance to use "Basic" in the Company (I heard "Real programmers write in C" quite a lot), but all these voices died down when I actually showed them a working System with the source code that almost anyone could understand. This is the most important reason for me as we work in a validated environment where customers can audit us, including a source code review. Basic is a lot closer to a human language than C which makes reviewing much easier.
Anyway we've now sold over 500 units in the last 2 1/2 years and customers have not found a single bug!
Keep up the good work and lets see what the next 20 years brings.
Regards
