amazing since these chips have the same chip ID. in these cases they are binary compatible. this means that old code should work in the U version.

it should work.
in the worse case it requires a small change. (for example CLS clears double amount of pages). But i think it will work just fine.

if you feel the dat file is not ok (containing hardware registers not in the chip, or missing hardware registers) then please send it to support.
I used the atmel studio files as a reference.

Both the XMEGA and the LCD displays are powered with 5V
Atxmega is specified for 3,3V not 5V. Try to run the atxmega with 3,3V.
