Hello
I would like to do some hardware debugging on an MEGA1284. Apparently the JTAGICE mkII is obsolete. What is a recommended alternative to the JTAGICE mkII ?
A second question. I was looking at the application note "MINI-MAX/AVR-C using JTAGICE mkII", that show how to single-step through Bascom code. My question: Is it possible to watch variables as well?
Thanks,
GerrySC

The Atmel site would give you refs to debugging tools for whatever platform you use.
While I still use JTAG-ICE and AVR Studio, Studio has become far too complex.
I tend now to debug mostly using the excellent Bascom simulator to check routines and calculations, where you need direct access to the variable values. Not real time, of course, but you dont need it just to check that a routine runs as expected. If you write good modular routines, you can just run the routine as a test object, in a 'bare bones' main program which allows direct manual inputs to all the variables.
For low level debugging in realtime, Studio is about the only way, but then you only need access to registers and the targets in SRAM. Almost all of this can be done at assembler level, without needing access to the Bascom variables. _________________ Adrian Jansen

I have the JTAGICE3. it is not supported by bascom yet since the protocol was changed again but it is under construction, at least for the programming part. But it works excellent with studio.
However, i think there is already yet another ICE programmer from atmel. it is hard to keep up with.
I am looking into HW debugging. Maybe we will include coff or elf file. _________________ Mark |

Thanks for the replies.
I tried the Build in emulator, but I have to many external inputs and outputs, plus communication to a Xbee wifi module.
I suppose I will have to wait until the JTAGICE3 can be used with Bascom
Best regards,
